What Is a PAC-3 Missile?

If that fails, ballistic missiles are then interrupted by the THAAD anti-ballistic missile system. The final layer of defense is the PAC-3 missile.
The Patriot PAC-3 provides a reactive hit-to-kill capability for both altitude and range while working in all environments. It uses a propellant rocket motor, aerodynamic controls, altitude control motors, and inertial guidance to navigate.
History of the PAC-3 Missile System

- 1990-1991 – For early missions of the PAC-3 missile, it was used as an anti-aircraft system. The missile’s performance during the Gulf War indicated success, but also highlighted the need to engage ballistic threats more effectively.
- 2001 – In this year the PAC-3 achieved its first successful intercept of a ballistic missile during a test.
- 2003 – The missile was deployed against ballistic missiles for the first time in 2003, being used during the Iraq War.
- 2004-2010 – Contracts for these missiles continued to be placed during this time. For example, in October of 2008, there was an order placed from Taiwan for 330 PAC-3 missiles.
- 2017 – In November of this year, the PAC-3 MSE (Missile Segment Enhancement) was introduced, further advancing the PAC-3’s capabilities.
Today, ongoing development and testing continues to enhance these missiles’ operations.
